How do I put these ideas into a thesis statement?

Even though not everyone eats at a fast food restaurant, we are still in danger of risking our health because of the meats that are being processed by the system. Do we all suddenly abandon our local supermarkets and head to the farmers market? But what happens if we can’t afford to? Do we consider paying the price now with our pockets or with our health? How much more power are we giving to these multinational corporations before we expect them to face responsibility for what they have done and change this process. A corporation as powerful as the tobacco industry has finally declined so can these corporations.

  • First, you will need to pick one and only one topic.  There are no less than six topics in these sentences:
  1. fast food industry
  2. local supermarkets
  3. famers markets
  4. corporations
  5. food processing
  6. cost of food
  • Next, you will need to eliminate the vague words (in bold):

Even though not everyone eats at a fast food restaurant, we are still in danger of risking our health because of the meats that are being processed by the system. Do we all suddenly abandon our local supermarkets and head to the farmers market? But what happens if we can’t afford to? Do we consider paying the price now with our pockets or with our health?  How much more power are we giving to these multinational corporations before we expect them to face responsibility for what they have done and change this process. A corporation as powerful as the tobacco industry has finally declined so can these corporations.

  • Is your topic focused on the price of food on the family, the community, or the nation?  Also, who are these multinational corporations?  Are these the companies who market groceries?  (e.g., Hershey, Nabisco, Kraft)
  • To build a thesis statement will need to get rid of all the rhetorical questions.
  • I like the food processing topic best, so I would limit it to something like this:

"The growing trend of consumers are buying homegrown organic groceries due to the media's exposing of the harmful effects of the food processing and preservation by corporate food suppliers."

Sometimes you can take a question and turn it into a statement/argument and use it for a thesis statement to begin the writing process.

For example, the question, "Do we all suddenly abandon our local supermarkets and head to the farmers market?" can be restated as: To insure healthy bodies we should eat locally by shopping at the local farmers' market where organically grown local produce is available. To support this idea you could list all the reasons why (giving each a paragraph of their own) and the positive results from making the change to eat locally. Google "Slow Food Movement" you may find some interesting ideas.
