Daniel’s Story is a 1993 historical fiction and children’s novel written by Canadian writer Carol Matas. It tells the tragic and inspiring story of Daniel—a young and courageous Jewish boy who survives Hitler’s Nazi regime and manages to retain his life and his pride. He eventually marries the girl he fell in love with and builds a family of his own; however, nearly all of his family members and everyone who is close to him dies a tragic death: many of his aunts, uncles, and cousins are either shot and killed or are deported to the concentration camps and die from starvation. Such is the case with his uncle Walter, who is sent to the death camp, and his wife, Aunt Hannele, who is shot. They had three children who were all around the same age as Daniel.
