Like most bands, Grand Funk Railroad was the product of a collaborative process involving several members as well as producers and engineers. Also like many bands, the main or most prominent creative voice in Grand Funk Railroad can be identified through a reading of the band's history and of the copyrighted material for which the band is known. In the case of GFR, that would be Mark Farner, the band's lead vocalist and guitarist, who also wrote much of the band's material, including "I'm Your Captain." While GFR broke up in 1976, its core members, Farner, bassist Mel Schacher and drummer Don Brewer, have continued to reunite from time to time for tours around the country.
