While history has provided us with a fair number of corrupt popes, Pope Alexander VI might very well have been the worst of the lot. After rising through the church ranks with the help of his uncle's wealth, he became the pope only by bribing two other canidates out of the race. He fathered at least 7 illegitimate children, all of whom were given handsome allowances out of the church's pocket, and appointed his brother and one of his sons as cardinals. He also liked to have wealthy citizens jailed on false charges so he could then steal their money. About Alexander VI, Giovanni de Medici (who would become Pope Leo X) said,

“Now we are in the power of a wolf, the most rapacious perhaps that this world has ever seen. And if we do not flee, he will inevitably devour us all.”
