The main characters are the family, whom we follow in their car. Bailey is the father, who is cowardly and quiet, allowing himself to be pushed around by his mother, his wife, and his kids. John Wesley, his son, is a stocky kid with glasses, who seems to be the most normal of the family. He wants to see the house Grandmother talks about, & this is why Bailey ends up turning down the side road and encountering the Misfit. His sister, June Star, is the stereotypical bratty sister. She asks annoying questions, is mean to her brother, & is disappointed that no one dies in the car accident.

The two most important characters are Grandmother and the Misfit. Grandmother is an old woman, very set in her ways, who demands to be listened to at all times, but never offers the same courtesy to anyone else. It is only at the moment of her death that she connects to another soul and can understand her existence. The Misfit is a lifetime criminal, who has suffered more than he should for his crimes. His hardships early in life led him to harden his heart, yet he remains incredibly polite to everyone he meets.
