The protagonist and narrator Amir is definitely the most morally ambiguous character. He presents a challenge to the reader in that he is not as sympathetic as his friend Hassan, so we are less likely to relate with Amir and his actions (or lack of action) during Hassan's assault. As readers, we must see Amir at his lowest point and follow him on his redemption journey.

As a child, Amir is desperate for his father's love, and his mother has died in childbirth, so he feels very isolated. He is not a bad person, but he is so intent on winning his father's affection that he betrays his best friend. Amir wants to win the kite fighting tournament to impress his father; Baba feels no real connection with his son because they have such different interests and personalities. Kite fighting is the one thing they share. We hope with Amir that he can pull off this feat and build a relationship with Baba.
