The dog is first introduced as a nameless mutt. Throughout the story, readers learn that this character is called multiple names such as Toby, Fella, Bailey, Ellie, and Buddy. Throughout the novel, this dog is reborn and keeps his memories from previous lives.

Ethan Montgomery is one of the dog's owners. Ethan names the dog Bailey. Readers learn that while it seems as though Ethan has a perfect life, he is struggling with many things. One example is that his parents are having marital issues. Ethan meets a girl named Hannah and falls in love with her.

Hannah is another main character. She is Ethan's love interest. Hannah meets Bailey when he is reincarnated and reintroduces him to Ethan.

While Ethan and Hannah are dating in high school, a boy named Todd tries to break them up. Todd has many odd hobbies such as blowing things up and catching things on fire. Ultimately Todd causes a lot of problems for Ethan.

Jakob is another member of the police force who works with the dog. Jakob is shot while on duty and has a tragic life.
