It is difficult to answer this question, as countries have always fought revolts for freedom against stronger kingdoms, but many of these are better understood as dynastic conflicts rather than freedom struggles. Perhaps the first modern nation to wage a successful war of independence was the Netherlands, which overthrew Spain in a decades-long revolt that was part of the massive religious struggles of the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The first colonial peoples to overthrow their parent country were England's American colonies, who declared their independence in 1776 and were recognized by England in the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Another significant revolt occurred in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, where a successful slave revolt in 1791 led to a long struggle that culminated in the creation of Haiti in 1804.
