The closest star to the Earth is the Sun which is at a mean distance of 149.6 million kilometers from the Earth. Mars is not a star but another planet that orbits the Sun like the Earth does. The distance of the Earth from the sun changes around the year as the Earth's orbit is not circular but elliptical in nature.

The time taken by light emitted by the Sun to reach the Earth is approximately 8 minutes and 19 seconds. After the Sun, the nearest star to the Earth is Proxima Centauri which is at a distance of 4.2 light years or approximately 39.9 trillion kilometers from the Earth.

The Sun, which is 8 light-minutes away.

The Sun is the closest star to the earth. Its only 8 light-minutes away. For comparison's sake, the next closest star is Proxima Centauri in the Alpha Centauri system which is 4.2 light-YEARS away. (Light year refers to the distance the light travels in a year.) There is an interesting infographic that shows you other nearby stars.

The sun is the closest star to the earth which probably explains why it's one of the biggest star that we are able to see with our naked eyes. The sun is only a mere 150 million km from earth unlike the second closest star to earth which is Proxima Centaura being about 4.2 light years away.

Every star has its own solar system, each planet revolving around the star. Earth revolves around the Sun, making it the closest to the Earth. Although at night, there are very many stars seen in the sky, they are very distant from Earth. If you compare the Sun's size to the stars you see at night, it is evident that the Sun is bigger.

Which Star Is Closest To Earth?

The Star is the closet to Earth, As you probably know, our Sun is just a star. It’s our closest, most familiar star, but it’s still just a star. With a great big Universe out there, populated with countless stars, astronomers have been able to see examples of stars in all shapes, sizes, metal content and ages.

The sun, at a distance of about 92 million miles, is the closest star to Earth. After the sun, the closest stars are the members of the triple star system known as Alpha Centauri (Alpha Centauri A, Alpha Centauri B, and Alpha Centauri C, sometimes called Proxima Centauri). They are 4.3 light-years away. (A light-year is the distance light travels in one year, about 5.9 trillion miles.)

Our sun is the star closest to Earth. It is what shines light into our everyday lives. It gives us the energy we use to get along in our lives. It gives plants the nutrients they need to grow. The sun, our star, is a necessity in our daily lives.
