I am doing a term paper over the spring break on tragic heroes/ heroines, i want to analyze all concepts of tragedy, as well as compare modern heroes to tragic heroes. I already have my tragic heroes/ heroines;
Oedipus, Macbeth, Lucifer (Paradise Lost)
Tess of the D'urbervilles?
Two others would be Joe Keller from Arthur Miller's All My Sons and Caddy Compson from William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury.
Concerning your question about modern tragic heroes, how about the following:
Jay Gatsby, from The Great Gatsby
Maurya, from Synge's Riders to the Sea
Joseph K., from Kafka's The Trial
Madame Bovary, from, you know
And I don't remember his name, but the priest in Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory
You already have a good idea of modern tragedy if you've decided on Tess, so I won't go into that at all. If no one else answers and I think of any more I'll email you. Hope these help.
Thank you so very much, DStuva : )
