By the middle of the nineteenth century, the rise of American big business directly fed into the emergent imperial interests of the United States. This was the result of both the demand American businesses had for raw materials coming from distant parts of the globe to mass produce commodities as well as the impetus business owners had to market their products to a global audience. A good example of this is the United Fruit Company, formed in 1899, which specialized in the sale of rare, tropical fruits to American consumers. Prior to the early twentieth century, foods such as oranges and bananas were relatively unknown to the average American household; it was only well into the mid-twentieth century that they came to attain their universal presence in American supermarkets.
