If you have to choose which of these companies you would want to work for, you have to consider whether you want greater security, or more of a chance to make a lot of money and gain status if you are a good worker.  If you want to be relatively secure, Company A is better.  If you want to have the chance to make more money and get promotions (though that chance also comes with the chance of demotion) Company B is better.

In Company A, you will not go anywhere very quickly.  After five years, you cannot be promoted and your salary will not be much higher than that of a low performer.  After 10 years, you can possibly be promoted, but your salary will still not be that much higher than the lowest earners.  By contrast, in Company B you can be promoted after 5 years and your salary can be much greater than that of the lowest earner both after 5 and after 10 years.  If you want to be rewarded for excellence, Company B seems better.  However, in Company B, you can be demoted after 10 years.  This means there is more danger to you in that company.  You are also in danger of making much less money than the high achievers if you are among the lowest in the company.

So which of these sounds better to you?  Make your choice based on the information I have given.
