Which movie version of Romeo and Juliet do you think is best and why? Versions: Franco Zefferelli 1968 version; Baz Luhrmann 1996 version

It really depends on what you are looking for.  I enjoy both versions but for different reasons.  Zefferelli's version is more accuarate and is almost done line-for-line.  Luhrmann's version modernizes the play as a whole with the exception of the language.  Both are accurate, and I think younger audiences tend to lean towards Luhrmann's, whereas older audiences tend to lean towards Zefferelli's.  I show clips of Zefferelli's version in my class and we watch the entire Luhrmann rendition, mainly becuase I have HS freshman and they tend to connect and relate better to the 1996 version.
