Remember that a character who is symbolic will stand for something greater than him/herself.  With this in mind, many of the characters from The Witch of Blackbird Pond fit the bill. Most of them are symbolic of entire groups of people or human emotions/tendencies.

You could start by examining Hannah.  How do other people treat her, and why is she so isolated?  What group of people might she represent (hint:  she does not only represent Quakers)?

How about Judith and Mercy?  They seem to symbolize two opposite things.  I think they could be symbolic of certain human characteristics.
