Chromosomes are composed of DNA and protein and are found in the nucleus of cells. Somatic cells which are also known as body cells contain chromosomes which are arranged in pairs. This is the diploid amount of chromosomes which an organism gets from the fusion of the parents' sperm and egg cells at fertilization. Chromosomes are also found in gametes. However, the amount of chromosomes present is the haploid amount. This is because of the process of meiosis which reduces the chromosome amount by half to produce gametes or sex cells. Each cell in the body contains chromosomes except for red blood cells. They lack a nucleus. Therefore, all cells of the body contain chromosomes with the exception of red blood cells.
