Where the Crawdads Sing, written by Delia Owens and published in 2018, tells the story of Catherine "Kya" Clark who lives with her mother, father, and four siblings on the marshes near Barkley Cove, North Carolina. Kya’s father is a veteran of World War II and is physically and emotionally abusive toward his wife and children. When Kya is five, her mother leaves. Soon after, her siblings also leave, leaving her alone with her father.

Kya knows very little about her family history but, in chapter 7, her father briefly mentions that his parents used to be rich and were from Asheville:

My folks weren't always po’, ya know.

However, his family lost their money during the Great Depression. When she is ten, Kya's father also leaves, leaving her to survive alone on the marshes.
