The story is set in a tribal village on the outskirts of a jungle forest in India where Baldeo lives with his wife, his daughter, and son Tembu. The family grows rice for subsistence. In addition, Baldeo works as a watchman for the railroad company. His duty includes keeping the signal lamp burning and ensuring the railroad tunnel has no obstructions. One fateful night, Baldeo leaves his son behind in the hut not far from the railroad. He ventures out on his routine duty and while at the signal tower, he is attacked by a marauding tiger. A vicious fight ensues with Baldeo using his axe to defend himself from the tiger. Unfortunately, the tiger kills him, and Tembu is forced to take over his father’s position as the new railroad watchman.
