Victor travels down the Rhine on his way to London and then on to Scotland and then finally to a remote island where he can be alone. He has travelled in order to find a place that is appropriate for him to finish the work of building a companion for the monster, something he promised to do but something that also filled him with a sick dread knowing that it isn't right and that it will likely also lead to further horror and disaster.
Victor travels with Henry Clerval with the idea being that they will go together to London and Scotland to study, but Victor knows the main task that lies ahead of him. Clerval cannot figure out why it is that Victor is so down as they travel through beautiful places and Henry looks forward to meeting new people and studying.
