As Dinu and Alison enter into adulthood in The Glass Palace, World War II breaks out. Alison and Dinu are at the rubber plantation, but their area is under the threat of Japanese attacks. The two leave for Singapore with Saya John, but they cannot board the train, and Alison must drive her grandfather to safety if she can.

Before Alison leaves Dinu, she agrees to marry him. However, Alison's car breaks down after only a short distance, and Alison and Saya John sleep in the car. Alison wakes up to find her grandfather gone. She searches for him, but she runs directly into Japanese soldiers and watches as they kill Saya John. Alison shoots two of them and is wounded herself. She then commits suicide so they cannot capture her.

After Alison's death, Dinu reaches Rangoon and then performs guard duty in the village of Huay Zedi (where he goes to search for his family) and eventually meets soldiers led by Arjun. Because of the previous connection between Dinu and Arjun (and perhaps also in memory of Alison, for both men loved her), Arjun's troops agree to leave the village alone. Dinu ends up a photographer after the war.
