While Write does not directly give a specific location in "Bright and Morning Star," he tells us near the beginning of the story that Sue can see "the airplane beacon in far-off Memphis." Given that the rest of the plot suggests a small town or rural area, it makes sense to read the story as taking place in such an area around the general area of Memphis Tennessee. Given that the history of lynching in the US South is tragically broad, and the histories of communist and antiracist organizing are also broad, the story coud easily take place in most any county around Memphis that had a large enough Black and white population to produce the kinds of conflict that take place over the course of the story.
