Although the Spanish American War was fought by Spain and the United States, the war did not take place in either the US or mainland Spain. Instead, the war took place in various places that were then owned by Spain. The main places where fighting occurred were Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
The main fighting of this war took place in Cuba. Cuba was really the major cause of the war as the United States was interested in helping the Cuban movement for independence from Spain. This island was also the scene of the most famous battle of this war, the Battle of San Juan Hill. That battle created the most famous American “hero” in this war. This hero was Theodore Roosevelt, who would soon become president of the United States. The US also invaded and took Puerto Rico.
The other fighting in the war took place in the Philippines. There was not really much fighting there, with only one major naval battle and one land battle. The main American hero of the fighting in the Philippines was Admiral George Dewey, who was in command of American naval forces.
This was a short war with relatively little fighting. There were very few American heroes, with the most famous being Roosevelt and Dewey.
The Spanish American War started on 25th April in the year 1898, when the United States declared war on Spain after the Battleship Maine sunk in the Havana harbor, on the 15 of February in the same year.
Tension had been building up between both countries for a quite some time but the sinking of the Battleship Maine can be considered as a sort of starting point of the War.
The war took place in Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines Islands which were under the occupation of Spain.
The war ended on 10th of December, 1898 after the signing of the "Treaty of Paris," which made Spain lose control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines Islands, Guam, and other islands.
