"The Leap" by Louise Erdrich is narrated by a young woman who has recently returned home to care for and read to her elderly mother Anna who has gone blind from cataracts.

Anna was originally married to Harold Avalon. They were part of a trapeze act in a circus called the Flying Avalons. The circus was performing in New Hampshire. A sudden thunderstorm came up during the performance and lightning struck the circus tent just as the Flying Avalons were performing the finale of their act. Although Harold Avalon died, Anna survived and was taken to a hospital to be treated for her injuries.

At the hospital, during a period of extended recuperation, Anna met the doctor who became her second husband and the narrator's father.
