Joel met Daniel in the mountainside around Galilee. Daniel’s father and uncle were killed by Roman soldiers and his mother died after suffering from a short illness. Daniel and his sister were left under the care of their grandmother, who was unable to take care of both of them. She eventually sold Daniel into slavery, to a blacksmith named Amalek for a period of 10 years. After the third year, Daniel escaped into the mountains and Joined Rosh, a rebel leader committed to killing the Romans. Daniel who was on watch in the mountainside recognized two teenagers, Joel and his sister. He decided to make contact and when they talked, Daniel learned that Joel and his sister were also running away from their parents, who had decided to leave Galilee for Capernaum. Joel believed that redemption for the Jews would begin in Galilee and wished to join Rosh in the fight against the Romans.
