The previous response was quite accurate.  In Social Studies responses, the need to ensure clarity is critical.  I can only presume that you would receive better marks in addressing the following items in a thorough manner.  The first would be to ensure that you are answering all parts of the prompt being asked.  The second that quickly follows would be to ensure that you are meeting a burden of providing evidence or strong analysis to support that point.  It is here where the Social Studies response might differ from other responses.  The Social Studies response owes much of its distinction to the need to provide substantiated evidence in ensuring that it fully answers the question provided.  The need to provide evidence is probably the better marks would lie.  The more evidence and more clearly applied it is, improvement in marks result.

In any response you write, you need to make an assertion or state an opinion and support it with your knowledge of the subject at hand.  Often, using your class readings as support is helpful because it demonstrates that you have read and understood what you have read, in short, that you have learned something.  Similarly, you can use lecture notes to support your ideas.  If you have some understanding of current events that can be used to support your ideas, that is fine, too. The key to a successful response, though, is always to support your ideas with specific details and examples.  Avoid making general statements that have no evidence to support them.
