After managing to avoid the sirens, and navigate between Scylla, the six-headed monster, and Charybdis, the whirlpool, Odysseus and his men arrive at the island of Thrinacia. While on the island, Odysseus and his men ignore the warnings of Circe and Tiresias and slaughter the sacred cattle of the sun god Helios. Odysseus and his men then suffer a horrific shipwreck as retribution for their slaughtering of the sacred cattle, where all of the men except Odysseus drown. Odysseus washes ashore on Calypso's island, where he first meets the nymph and is compelled to remain for seven years as her lover.
