The article 'Of the Religion of Deism Compared With the Christian Religion' was written in 1804. It was Thomas Paine's seminal article on Deism, a denomination of Christianity which was popular with many affluent Americans in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This article was not the first time that Paine had written about Deism; in fact, this article appeared fairly late in Paine's life and long after some of his most well-known publications. When he wrote 'Of the Religion of Deism', Paine had only been in America for two years, after working as the US Minister to France. Upon his return, he found that the public had all but forgotten his contributions to the American Revolution because they disagreed strongly with his religious views.
