Mary Oliver's poem "Lightning" which focuses on the perils of nature and the determination that all life must eventually come to an end was published in her volume entitled American Primitive. The piece also noted the concepts of acceptance of current conditions and healing. This entire collection was published in 1983, twenty years after her first work was ever published. Shortly after that, Oliver won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984 for her work in that volume. Being one of her greater achievements, this piece focuses of the Romantic nature that usually classifies her style.
