Ernest Hemingway wrote the short story “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” during the end of the Great Depression in the 1930s.  It was actually first published in a magazine, Esquire, in 1936.  In 1938, it was republished in a collection of short stories and writings called The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories. Another famous story also published in that collection is "Hills Like White Elephants.”  The Fifth Column is a play written about the Spanish Civil War, a favorite subject of Hemmingway’s.  “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” takes place in Africa.  It is the story of a writer who is dying and uses the opportunity to reflect on his life between World War I and II.
