A man named William Knight was the real life secretary to King Henry VIII. However, in the play this character does not exist. Instead, Bolt uses Thomas Cromwell as a man who has the "ear of the King".
The radio play was written in 1954, and the stage version was written in 1960. He also produced a successful film version of the play in 1966. Both the film and the play received numerous awards.
