There were steam-powered mechanisms that were sort of like automobiles invented long ago.  Specifically, there was one invented in 1771 and another about a hundred years later, in 1783.  But these were too slow to even be as good as having a horse.

The first automobiles using internal combustion engines were invented in the late 1880s in Germany (by men named Daimler and Benz).

The first automobile to really be made in great quantites was produced in 1901 -- it was called the Curved Dash Oldsmobile.
