After they get past the Scylla and Charybdis, Odysseus and his men see this island.  Odysseus does not want to go and land there but the men insist.  Once they land, a storm blows up and the winds blow the wrong way and they cannot leave for a month.

On the island are cattle belonging to the sun god.  Odysseus tells the men not to touch them.  But one day he is off in the mountains praying and sacrificing to try to get the gods to let him off the island.  As he comes back, he smells roasting meat and he knows that the men have killed some of the sun god's cattle.
