When Friar Laurence encounters Romeo after Romeo has been with Juliet, the friar thinks that Romeo has been with Rosaline. Why?

Given that Romeo has been whining and crying non-stop about the fact that Rosalyn will not return his love, everyone would assume that he would have been with her.  He even went to the party hoping to see her and since the friar has not spoken to Romeo since that fateful night, there is no way that he could know that he has found this new love in Juliet and abandoned the sweet Rosalyn to the dust-bin.

So it is basically a factor of the friar's ignorance but also a matter of chronology as there is simply no way he could know or have found out in that very short amount of time.
