After the Halloween pageant, Scout and Jem are attacked by a drunken Bob Ewell.  Ewell is trying to "get even" with Atticus for defending Tom Robinson against Bob's daughter Mayella's "rape" charges.  When Scout screams, it is Boo who comes to the rescue, even though Scout cannot see him through her ham costume that she is still wearing (she lost her pants at the pageant).  After she sees a large man carry Jem home and is introduced to Arthur Radley by her father, she sees him in a different light.  Scout offers to walk Arthur home once Jem awakens.
