It is not just Dell. Many companies outsource technical support outside of the US. This is primarily to save money, since the cost of living is cheaper overseas and often times the dollar is stronger. This may not be so in the future, but for now we have a lot of outsourcing. This is not necessarily a bad things for two reasons. First, this keeps costs down not only for the company, but also for us. Dell computer would be more expensive, if they did not outsource. Second, often times the person on the other end is rather knowledgeable.
One last statement about India. India is chosen, because many people there are not only educated, but also speak English.
While much of Dell's technical support is done through call centers in India, not all of it is.
Companies like Dell often choose India as a location for call centers because
- They are about 12 hours ahead of US times and so can work days to talk to American customers in the evening.
- They speak English
Dell also has call centers in the Philippines for much the same reasons.
Outsourcing call centers to countries like these is said to save Dell 50 to 70% when compared to US call centers.
