What are your personal impressions towards the book called Forbidden City?
My impression of the book is that it is a coming of age story for both Alex and his father. At the beginning of the novel Alex is a kid and his father still acts like one. However, because of the violent encounters that they endure and because of the courage that it takes to get through them, they both have no choice but to reach within themselves and find strength, wisdom and maturity. Alex is forced to grow up much more quickly than he would have otherwise. Because of this, he is able to appreciate his heritage and his family once he returns to Canada. On the other hand, his father is forced to finally grow up after years of refusing to do so. Because of this he can finally be a real father to his son.
