"Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" by the Police
Though I've tried before to tell her
Of the feelings I have for her in my heart
Every time that I come near her
I just lose my nerve as I've done from the start
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she doe just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on
Do I have to tell the story
Of a thousand rainy days since we first met?
It's a big enough umbrella
But it's always me that ends up getting wet
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she do just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on
I resolved to call her up
A thousand times a day
Ask her if she'll marry me
In some old fashioned way
But my silent fears have gripped me
Long before I reach the phone
Long before my tongue has tripped me
Must I always be alone

Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she do just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she do just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on
Every little thing, every little thing
Every little thing, every little thing
Every little, every little, every little
Every little thing she does
Every little thing she does
Every little thing she does
Every little thing she does
Thing she does is magic
Every little thing, every little thing
Every little thing she do is magic
Magic, magic, magic, magic, magic
Do I have to tell the story
Of a thousand rainy days since we first met?
It's a big enough umbrella
But it's always me that ends up getting wet
Since I had the pleasure of hearing it at a concert recently, I'm again reminded of the tenderness and loving images conveyed in Billy Joel's "Good Night My Angel." What a wonderful expression of all it means to be a parent.
Goodnight my angel, time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you've been asking me
I think you know what I've been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
Then you should always know
Wherever you may go, no matter where you are
I never will be far away
Goodnight my angel, now it's time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say
Remember all the songs you sang for me
When we went sailing on an emerald bay
And like a boat out on the ocean
I'm rocking you to sleep
The water's dark and deep, inside this ancient heart
You'll always be a part of me
Goodnight my angel, now it's time to dream
And dream how wonderful your life will be
Someday your child may cry, and if you sing this lullaby
Then in your heart there will always be a part of me
Someday we'll all be gone
But lullabies go on and on
They never die
That's how you and I will be
The late night TV show host of years gone by declared Bob Dylan the greatest poet of modern times, but....Still, his lyrics are great. Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" has stirring lyrics:
Send "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" Ringtone to your Cell
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all
I'm on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you

I'll take your part
When darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Sail on Silver Girl,
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
If you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
I love the songs that touch my emotions. The funny thing is that it depends on what I need. If a song plays at a time when I am feeling a strong emotion, and those lyrics reach deep into my heart, it kind of transports me. So my favorite songs change, but I often remember the emotions I felt when I hear the song. For example, I first remember a connection to “Eleanor Rigby” when I was in high school. This part stuck with me.
Father McKenzie, writing the words
of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near
Look at him working, darning his socks
In the night when there's nobody there
What does he care?
I am not sure why. It was just so sad. It spoke to me at that time. Now, when I hear it, I think of how I felt in high school.
Just about anything from Bob Dylan.
More recently, a great lyric was Jesus, etc. by Wilco.:
Jesus, don't cry
You can rely on me, honey
You can combine anything you want
I'll be around
You were right about the stars
Each one is a setting sun
Tall buildings shake
Voices escape singing sad sad songs
tuned to chords
Strung down your cheeks
Bitter melodies turning your orbit around
Don't cry
You can rely on me honey
You can come by any time you want
I'll be around
You were right about the stars
Each one is a setting sun
Tall buildings shake
Voices escape singing sad sad songs
tuned to chords
Strung down your cheeks
Bitter melodies turning your orbit around
Voices whine
Skyscrapers are scraping together
Your voice is smoking
Last cigarettes are all you can get
Turning your orbit around
Powerful stuff.
Wow... so many... Are you talking about whole songs or just single lines? If we're looking at just single lines, some of mine include:
- "I guess every form of refuge has its price." Eagles "Lyin' Eyes"
- "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true or is it something worse?" Bruce Springsteen "The River"
- And, because I listen to a lot of reggae, "The doctor said I had blood clots but I ain't Jamaican." (Not a deep lyric but a funny one.) Kanye West "Through the Wire."
I've always been partial to The Beatles, though it's pretty tough to choose just one specific song. John Lennon's "Imagine" had some beautiful thoughts behind the words.
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace
You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world
You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will live as one.
