Langston Hughes moved several times throughout his childhood. He lived with his mother, stepfather, and maternal grandparents throughout his childhood and teens. His homes included cities in Kansas, Illinios, and finally Ohio. He graduated from high school in Cleveland, Ohio in 1920 where he was publishing articles and poetry in a complex student publication and was the voted the class poet. His teachers introduced him to well known poets such as Carl Sandburg and Walt Whitman, who are some of his earliest influences.
