Hinton does not specify what year Johnny dies. There are some general hints—it's after 1960, because the other boys drive a Corvair in the early pages, and that wasn't made until 1960. Paul Newman started being really popular after movies in 1961 and 1963, and the book came out in 1967, so I'd bet 1963-1965.

The most definite answer I could come up with was; he was born, 1949 and died, 1965. I figured this from how S.E. Hinton wrote The Outsiders when she was in school to take place in her school with the events that were going around at the time. And the book tells you Johnny is 16 so with all the information and the things popular at the time and such, this date makes the most sense.
