what is writing?

In the most basic sense, writing is making marks on a surface. If the marks have been standardized and represent specific, agreed-upon bits of information, they may be called letters or hieroglyphs and may convey meaning when viewed by one who has learned the meanings of the marks.

In a deeper sense, writing is the record of experiences and feelings and ideas. Writing allows for expression of creativity, the capturing of history, the development of ideas and plans for generations to come, the sharing of thoughts and impressions with others over time and distance.
