The first part of the process is to state a question or problem to be answered. It must be clear and conscisely stated. Next, one must do research about what is known about this question. At this point, you can formulate a hypothesis. It is an educated guess about what the answer to the question or problem is. To test your hypothesis, you must do a controlled experiment. A valid experiment should test one variable and should have a large research sample to get valid results. One group, the experimental group gets the variable being tested. The other group, the control group, is there for comparison, but does not get the variable being tested. While conducting the experiment, data is collected. After the experiment, the data is analyzed and conclusions are made. Was the hypothesis correct or not? This information can be shared with others and for this research to be considered valid, others must be able to perform the experiment and get similar results.
