This is the chapter where Amir wins the kite tournament and Hassan goes off to look for the kite to bring it back to Amir as his prize. While Hassan is looking for the kite, he is surrounded by a group of boys who want to harm him. Assef is there as well. Amir looks for him and finds him with his pants down. The boys rape Hassan. Amir does nothing in fear.

If I were there, I hope that I would have to courage to stop the boys and stand up for what is right. I hope that I would be able to even fight the boys if they do not stop. But I also know that fear is a real force in the life of people.

In the least, I would have called out for help with the hopes of making the boys scared, so that they would flee. Also by shouting, I would try to draw attention to this act, so that others would come to intervene.
