What would be a solid call to action for the Death Penalty?

My thesis statement is "The death penalty is too expensive and risks executing innocent people and therefore does not effectively prevent people from dying."

The death penalty should be abolished. It is costly and decidedly unjust. It has never proven effective as a deterrent, except in pushing plea bargains. The appeals process and the length of the time an inmate is on death row is extremely expensive for the government.

There was a recent example in Kansas where the first dose of lethal injection did not kill the person as intended.  The electric chair is even more controversial, so another angle to come at this issue from is to argue against cruel and unusual methods of punishment, in violation of the 8th Amendment of the Constitution.

My thesis statement is "The death penalty is too expensive and risks executing innocent people and therefore does not effectively prevent people from dying."

The thing I think you need to pay attention to here is the fact that the three parts of your thesis don't go together.  First, you give two causes

  • It's too expensive
  • Risks executing innocent people

Then, you give an effect:

  • It does not effectively prevent people from dying.

But it is not at all clear that your effect follows from your causes.  If innocent people are sometimes executed, how does that make the death penalty ineffective as a deterrent?  If it's too expensive, how does that make it ineffective as a deterrent?

So I think that you need to be a bit clearer in your thinking.  If you want to keep on saying it's an ineffective deterrent, you have to tell why potential murderers wouldn't fear the death penalty.

So I would say something like "Because the death penalty is relatively rarely enforced and because it takes so long for a convict to be executed, it does not make people afraid to commit murders.

I guess you are actually looking for a call of action "against" the death penalty. Personally, I am in favor of the death penalty, and I think it should be enacted MORE OFTEN than it is. However, mine is probably a minority opinion, and you can probably find more statistical reasons why it should not be used than why it should be. So, if I was writing a persuasive essay against the use of the death penalty, I would probaby do some research concerning

  • cost of housing and feeding death row prisoners
  • cost of attorneys' fees (usually at the tax payer's expense) for those on death row
  • cost of the courts for hearing death row prisoners' appeals
  • examples of death row prisoners who have actually been found innocent and had their cases overthrown
  • examples of death row prisoners executed who have later been found to be innocent
  • statistics that show that the death penalty does not really serve as a deterrent to those committing capital offenses
