I need to write a comparison essay but I'm stuck on what my thesis should be. I have thought of two but I don't think they are very insightful. Any assistance would really be appreciated. Thank you so much.
1. Both protagonists are in a state of isolation but where the narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper" meets her downfall, Bub of "Cathedral" experiences an epiphany.
2. Both stories address the capabilities of the human mind in negative and positive ways.
Very interesting assignment. If I were you, I would be tempted to think about the way that both protagonists--the two narrators--are able to "see" their lives and their situations in different ways by the end of the story, though with radically different conclusions. Thus it is that the narrator of "Cathedral" is able to "see" for the first time through being asked to close his eyes and to "look" at his drawing. He experiences a radical epiphany that takes him beyond himself and causes him to examine his life and identity. In the same way, the narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper" projects herself and her own frustration into the creation of the woman who lurks behind the "bars" of the pattern of the yellow wallpaper. She sees this figure that doesn't actually exist, but which allows her to project her anger and frustration of being phsyically and intellectually stifled.
