There are two different points of view utilized in Let the Great World Spin, a novel that weaves the stories of a number of people together: First Person and Third Person Point of View.
- First Person Point of View
With first person point of view, the narration is told by one of the characters. For instance, a main character, the nurse from Guatemala who has two children and is named Abelita, loves another of the characters, Corrigan, who comes to New York in order to help his brother Clarian. In the part entitled CENTAVOS, Abelita watches Corrigan sleep in the morning, the first time he has stayed with her. She observes,"The thing about love is that we come alive in bodies not our own." [Abelita is the narrator, thinking aloud her thoughts; the use of the first person pronoun clearly indicates the First Person Point of View]
- Third Person Point of View
In the part entitled CRIMINAL COURT ARRAIGNMENT Part One-A, the narration is told from the point of view of an observer: This is a third person narrator; the narrator writes about others:
The doors creaked open behind him and in slouched a line of nine defendants toward the benches along the side wall.
