What would be the best way to go about creating a thesis statement on the examination of the role of religion in various utopian societies?
I'm studying many different utopian ideas: Utopia by More, The Republic by Plato, The Tempest by Shakespeare, etc. My paper is a critical examination of the role of religion in the creation of a utopian society.
This could almost be moved to the Religion Discussion forum for the sake of obtaining ideas from different viewpoints. Interesting topic!
A thesis statement is a summarization of the position your paper is going to develop in more detail. The thesis statement sets out the main point(s) you will be establishing; the body of your work addresses each of these points with supportive information to validate how it contributes to your thesis idea.
You have a well-defined goal for your paper. What do you feel the role of religion was in each of the texts you cite? How was religion a factor in the creation of each of those societies? Did religion influence the actions of the government? Did religion shape the ways in which people approached the creation of social patterns, leading to utopian societies?
As you answer these questions for each of your texts, look for common features, experiences, examples, and so on. When you have identified common factors in several of your example utopian societies, you will be finding the role of religion in each of those societies. Writing your thesis statement will then involve deciding how you want to express the common role you have found.
