Since the novel is told from Gene's point of view, it is easier to find words to describe Finny than it is to find those that describe Gene. I can start you off with a few about Finny:  "extraordinary  athlete," "the essence of this careless peace," "extraordinary kind of person,""Finny's life was ruled by inspiration and anarchy," "he was everywhere, he enjoyed himself hugely. He laughed out loud at passing sea gulls."

For Gene, finding specific quotations is more difficult, and you have to infer more.  He calls himself sarcastic and weak:

As I said, this was my sarcastic summer.  It was only long after that I recognized sarcasm as the protest of people who are weak.

We can also gather that he is envious:

I couldn't help envying him that a little, which was perfectly normal.  There was no harm in envying even your best friend a little.

He is also a follower:

I went along:  I never missed a meeting.  At that time it would never have occurred to me to say, "I don't feel like it tonight," which was the plain truth every night.
