Faulkner usually writes rather dark and difficult to fathom stories, The Wishing Tree is a far gentler and easier to enter story.  Dulcie and her friends are searching for the wishing tree, a tree that will grant anyone that asks their one wish.

As they search for the tree, the children come across various obstacles and learn and grow as they try to overcome them.  They are guided on this magical journey by an Elf named Maurice.

At the end of the story, the children return home and are more mature and have gained some wisdom and experience from their journey that they bring with them back to the real world.
