Obama had high hopes when taking office.  The best thing he can do for the middle class is get control of the housing market.  The majority of the wealth of the middle class is in home equity.  With home values going down as much as 75%, the middle class is on thin ice.  If Obama can stop and reverse the foreclosure crisis, that will go a long way toward a more stable middle class.

One of Barack Obama's key issues is reforming our health care system, which is a big problem for the middle class as well as those in poverty.  Those with no health insurance have an obvious need, but the rising costs of health care are making it unaffordable for many.

Obama promised a middle class tax cut during the campaign, and seems to be moving towards a tax plan that would lower the taxes for people in the middle class. This will put more money into the hands of consumers, which may also benefit the middle class as their jobs are dependent on a healthy economy where money is being spent.

One thing that I hope Barack Obama will do for the middle class is give them secure jobs and better education. Unfunded mandates to teach children don't work to better our society. Well educated and respected teachers who are compensated for the work they do will better our education system. I hope that Obama brings a greater level or respect to the middle class. A hard day of work ought not be something to be ashamed of, and in an era of young millionaires, leisure has become the respected lifestyle. I hope that changes.

Didn't I just hear Obama promised a tax increase of 50% on gasoline?  That was a week or two ago.  I believe his words before he was voted in were that he didn't mind the tax increase on gas and how high the prices were, he was just concerned at how quickly the prices went up.  I wouldn't care either if I didn't have to pay for gas.
