What were some of the warning signs of abuse (“red flags”) that existed early on in Waldal’s relationship with Derrick in Tornado Warning by Elin Stebbins Waldal?
Tornado Warning by Elin Stebbins Waldal
Unfortunately, Elin was able to see the signs of abuse in her friend’s relationships, but not hers. The red flags were there early on.
Derrick was older. At first, this seemed like a good thing. He had a job, and a business. However, this was a warning sign because he began to feel like he could control her.
Derrick had other violent relationships. Derrick was violent with friends and his brother. He even ended up in the hospital. Violence often begets violence, as the abused becomes the abuser.
Derrick was possessive. Derrick began to show jealousy early on. At first, Elin was kind of flattered by it. However, it soon became controlling.
I will also include risk factors for Elin, which can also be warning signs.
Elin was away from her support system. Elin lived with a friend, so she did not have parents looking out for her as she would if she lived with him.
The start of my senior year of high school on many levels was spring fed by a combination of events that made for a perfect storm. (p. 20)
Elin had low self-esteem. Elin wrote things in her diary that let us know she had low self-esteem.
I’m a self-conscious freak. If anything, I feel as if people don’t notice me… (p. 24).
Derrick made Elin feel special, which is one of the reasons why he was able to get control of her.
