Francis Newlands was a U.S. Senator from Nevada and had several accomplishments while he served in office. He is most well known for the Newlands Resolutions which annexed the Republic of Hawaii and turned it into a territory. This was eventually signed by President McKinley in 1902, despite being totally illegal and usurping the rule of Queen Liliuokalani.
Newlands was also well known for the Newlands Reclamation Act which funded irrigation projects for much of the American West. He was a big supporter of irrigation, land reclamation and the short lived “free sliver” movement. He was also a member of the subcommittee that investigated the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912.
Newlands was a self described “avowed racist” and ran for president on a platform which called for a constitutional amendment which would have disenfranchise black men and limit immigration to whites only.
